Hello my name is Isabel Chapman, Education and Employment Consultant/Mentor and I have worked with people from a range of backgrounds and communities for around ten years. I have held various different roles, from working in large corporate housing associations, to small charities, to estate based organisations in London to support people into work and paid opportunities. I am very passionate about supporting people into meaningful work, that is suitable and sustainable for their lifestyle.

Today we live in such a connected world, we can find out so much information about each other, even people we have never met, through Instagram, LinkedIn, Google… It can sometimes be confusing and disappointing when comparing ourselves to others, where they appear to be in their career and where we would like to be in ours. We all
know that the majority of us have larger workloads, smaller paycheques and higher than ever before expectations about work. So it is not surprising that from time to time we can find ourselves feeling disillusioned and disappointed about work.

One of the most important things I have learnt, in my own career and supporting others with their own goals, is the importance of having resilience in relation to work and being able to effectively deal with setbacks and disappointment. We all know, even if you have the best job in the world, there will unfortunately be times when you experience setbacks, disappointments and frustrations at work, however small or huge, it happens to most of us.

Often we are sold this myth that as soon as we get a job, everything becomes easy. It is all plain sailing from there. However, that is not reality for the vast majority of people and the job market has massively changed over the last 20-30 years. The old approach of joining a company and simply progressing through the ranks, is outdated. This approach certainly won’t work if you are ambitious, keen to progress and really want to develop your career.

So today I am going to talk to you about dealing with setbacks and disappointments in your role and some strategies to help you overcome them.

By the end of the course we will:

Explore how and why you may be feeling disappointed in your role
Identify what NOT to do
Learn the power of perspective
Discuss the options available to you
