Introduction

Hi my name is Andy Coley, confidence expert and NLP Trainer and I run a company called Beyond Training Solutions with my business partner Jo Wilson. I’m really pleased to be able to welcome you to this course all about how to become an effective mentor.

When you work with people that get you inspired, that you feel really “get you” the results within your business and career can be fantastic and great mentoring is all about passing on your knowledge in the right way to the individuals and teams that you’re working with.

As a NLP Trainer, I train 1000s of people each year in how to improve their coaching and mentoring skills through the use of language and this course is the best of what we do, condensed down into a bite sized chunk.

You may be aware of some of the elements I’ll be covering here, and that’s great, because by bringing them back into your conscious awareness it really means that you can become even better the next time you have a mentoring session.

My background was originally in IT; I was one of the basement geeks that would be in attendance when things went wrong at a technical level. I’ve worked for large Corporates such as IBM and Goldman Sachs as well as in many smaller teams. During my 20+ years of employment I’ve seen great mentors and I’ve also experienced, quite frankly rubbish ones.

This course will allow you to become a memorable mentor for all the right reasons. I bet you have people in your life that have guided you, helped you, taught you and the art of being a great mentor is something that you can learn and become even better at.

And of course, this won’t just apply in your working life, it’ll be something you can use at home with your partner, kids, family and friends. Mentoring really shouldn’t just be for the workplace!

At the end of this course you will:

  • Know what the difference is between coaching and mentoring
  • Realise how we all represent our points of view differently
  • Be able to listen well to what is being said to you
  • Have some fantastic language tools that allow you to expand the conversations you’re having with people
  • Be able to switch people from looking at problems to solutions
  • Allow your mentee to set outcomes to make it happen

Sound good?

So let’s get started.

Andy Coley has a very personable style and puts his message across with ease. His explanation of the difference between coaching and mentoring was particularly good. I was left at the end of watching this course with a sense that as a coach I am doing a lot of the things I need to do already, and with enough hints and tips to feel I can do better. If I follow the advice given I am sure my coaching can only improve.
