Hi, my name is Talia Loderick and I’m here to talk to you about money.
As a journalist and writer I’ve covered many different stories but my favourite
subject has always been money. I’ve covered everything from clearing credit card debt
to cutting the cost of car insurance to why it pays to know your consumer rights. And
it does pay – one of my best friends still reminds me of when, aged 17, I recited the
Sale of Goods Act to a shop assistant at Argos who was refusing to refund my friend
for the faulty heated hair roller set she’d bought. Yep, that’s me! I stood my ground
with the shop staff and my friend got her cash back.

Now, as a coach, I help people identify and achieve their goals, and money always
comes up in conversation. It’s no surprise really, because how you manage your money
has a huge impact on your life, from material things like the clothes you wear and
the car you drive, to your physical and mental health and also your relationships.

So, I like to help people be better with money. This course is you for you if you’d
like to:

  • stop worrying about money and get a handle on it;
  • create a positive relationship with money and feel positive when you think and talk
    about money;
  • set financial goals and create a plan to achieve them.

This course is relevant for everyone, no matter your background and whatever the size
of your bank balance. You can be brilliant at what you do for a living but still feel
stupid when it comes to managing money. You can earn a little or a lot and still
ultimately feel trapped and in a job you hate because you need to make ends meet. I
know people who’ve stuck in terrible work environments, damaging to their mental
health, because they felt they couldn’t leave as their outgoings were so high they
couldn’t afford to. If you always spend more when you earn more, it doesn’t take much
to be one pay cheque from despair.

And that’s the worst isn’t it – when a lack of money limits your options. So this
course is for people looking to make a change – financial freedom so you can make
better life choices.

If you can think big-picture about money, you can build a life that allows you
freedom instead of restrictions. Because if you have a financial cushion and you’re
not making decisions from a financially-tight point of view then it opens your

Ultimately, money is a tool – pun intended! You want to be in a position where you
control money, not the other way round. To do this, we’ll focus on five key areas.

1. MONEY MINDSET. Before we get on to the practical side of money management, it’s
important we take a step back and identify and examine your thoughts and feelings
around money. For example, if you repeatedly tell yourself you’re ‘bad’, ‘useless’ or
‘hopeless’ with money, it’s no surprise if this shows in your actions. But also, why
do you believe this? Where does this opinion of your money management skills come
from? I’ll help you give this some thought.

tracking your spending so you can see where your money goes now. It could well be the
case you have more than you think. We’ll then create a budget to help you decide
where your money is spent in future.

3. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE? SETTING FINANCIAL GOALS. If you don’t know where you’re
going, you don’t stand a great chance of getting there any time soon, if at all. Once
you set your destination – even if that’s to earn enough to jack it all in and escape
to a tropical island – if you have a plan, you’ll get there faster.

4. DEBT & SAVINGS 101. If you’re in debt, you’re not alone. Consumer credit debt in
the UK stands at almost £4,000 per person on credit cards and loans. I’ll share key
ways to reduce debt and increase savings on your journey to financial freedom.

5. MEASURING PROGRESS & EVALUATING SUCCESS If your money is going to take care of
you, you have to take care of it. So, as the final part of this course, we’ll look at
how to make sure your financial plan is still on track.

And here’s what I’m not going to do: I am not going to tell you to ditch your daily
coffee habit. If your daily takeaway latte/americano/flat white/delete as appropriate
coffee habit is what keeps you going, so be it. Because I can see how this sort of
well-meaning and perfectly valid but rather clichéd ‘top money-saving tip’ can put
people off wanting to be better with their money if they associate it with this
miserly, penny-pinching joy-free existence of cutting back on takeaway coffees and
any other small expenditures that bring a bit of joy to people’s lives.

What I will help you do though, is work out whether you can afford that daily coffee
habit. Then, YOU can weigh up if you want to spend £3 a day on your daily coffee
habit or whether you’re happy to reign this expense in if it means you can achieve
your financial goals that bit faster – whether that’s clearing debt or saving for a
round-the-world trip.

So, here’s to mastering your money. Let’s get started.
