Empowering Users to Change Their Story

“The video content from Careercake is like a friend; it helps to reinforce our messaging in an upbeat and professional way. The way the presenter talks to the viewer is positioned perfectly, they don’t talk down to the user”.

National Learning Network is the largest private provider of personalised education, training and employment services in Ireland. It supports people who have experienced a setback, have had an accident, a mental health issue, an illness, injury or have a disability and extra support needs.

Their approach is simple: to help power their users by changing their story.

Aoife Ryan works on the Fresh Start Programme - an initiative that supports adults to achieve pathways such as returning to education or applying for a work placement. The end result is to upskill and help clients to realise their potential to go on to achieve the next big step.

She spoke with us to share her experience of using Careercake as one of the tools to support her clients returning to work.

Aoife tells us: “Our clients had previously been in work but now, for one reason or another, they are unable to perform the same role. It can be extremely overwhelming; there’s a lot of confidence boosting required during what can be a difficult time”.

“It’s our job to help show them they’ve got a great range of skills; they just need to understand how to present them differently to open up these opportunities” she says.

What led Aoife to Careercake in the first place? “We needed something person-centred to really speak to the clients. We needed something that was fresh, but more importantly, we needed learning that injected enthusiasm to support a process that can be a bit daunting sometimes” says Aoife.

A lot of the alternatives out there seemed to date very quickly, didn’t have real, authentic people and relied on animations; they didn’t speak to the end user like an individual.

Confidence-boosting content (that’s like a friend)

National Learning Network uses Careercake’s career development content as part of its blended learning approach. It subscribes to our full on-demand learning library, packed with over 100 videos aimed at supporting users to enter the workplace and thrive once they’re there.

When asked what part of Careercake does she feel works best, Aoife immediately talks about the authenticity of the presenters:

“The video content from Careercake is like a friend; it helps to reinforce our messaging in an upbeat and professional way. The clients are not school leavers, they have been working already, so they aren’t starting from scratch.

The way the presenter talks to the viewer is positioned perfectly, they don’t talk down to the user”.

All presenters who appear in Careercake videos have to have experienced the topic they are talking about. Our viewers can tell when they’re watching someone who’s reading a script, it needs to be authentic for someone to make sense of it and apply it to their own situation. (So we’re super happy this method of creating video learning is engaging and working for their audience!)

What successes have you had?

Aoife tells us National Learning Network and its clients are seeing a number of positives from using Careercake as part of its programmes.

“There are many success stories but the one that stands out is we had a client who was keen to re-join the workplace but had real confidence issues. She felt that so much had changed since she had been in work last, there was so much to navigate. But once she started to understand how to repackage her skill set, it just clicked and her confidence soared. She went on to secure full time work”.
